I have been going through all the books on my shelf recently and trying to donate some that I'm not sure I'll ever read or use again. But when I got to my Harry Potter shelf, I stopped and opened the first book. Then the next thing I knew, it was a week later, and I was cracking the seventh book.

What JK Rowling built with these books is unparalleled. Not only do the stories appeal to kids and adults, but the series continues to grow, finding success on the big and small screen via Harry Potter movie adaptations, as well as in the parks all over the globe.

Today, I wanted to go over some of the Harry Potter quotes I thought were the most powerful.

Let's dive in.

1. "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

For me, one of the best quotes of the entire series comes in the second book. We get a lot of moments in life where we have to make choices. They can be paralyzingly hard, but our choices make us who we are more than anything else.

So choose wisely.

2. "I am what I am, an' I'm not ashamed. 'Never be ashamed,' my ol' dad used ter say, 'there's some who'll hold it against you, but they're not worth botherin' with.'" - Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Hagrid is one of the most interesting characters in all the books. He's a guy who has suffered huge tragedies, and yet he still perseveres. He is actually living the life he never thought possible, and never forgets that, even when bad things happen.

3. "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This quote, I think, should be most people's driving force. You have to let go of dreams and focus on reality. You have to keep moving forward and not live in the past.

4. "Hearing voices no one else can hear isn't a good sign, even in the wizarding world." - Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I think this is who Ron is to me; he's not the smartest character, but he's so logical and sane. It really grounds the books and the stakes of the characters.

5. "I hope you're pleased with yourselves. We could all have been killed - or worse, expelled." - Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This is the ethos of who Hermione is as a character, and it's all rolled up into one line that will live forever. That's great writing.

6. "To have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This is a quote about Moms that rings so true. I think Dumbledore got all the best quotes in the books and movies, but he deserved them.

7. "Where's the fun without a bit of risk?" - Fred Weasley, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The playfulness of the twins was one of the best parts of the book for me. I really identified with them the most and this is sort of my life philosophy.

8. "Always." - Severus Snape, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

This banger of a one-word line shook me when I read it, and I think it only delivers more power in the movies as well. We understand all the ache behind who Snape was in that moment.

9. "Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect." - Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I love Luna as a character. I think there's so much truth in what she says here. I like the Potter world because it feels like signs can come from beyond the grave and that even when characters die, they never go away.

10. "Dobby is free." - Dobby, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I saved this for last, but it's one I go back to. I think Dobby's arc is much better in the books than in the movies. He's an elf who has been through a lot, but overcoming his enslavement and becoming free is such a punch of joy and a miraculous moment where pure good triumphs over pure evil.

Summing It All Up

The Harry Potter universe has a huge burden to carry. It has so much popularity that it feels like whatever gets associated with it, whether that's the author being vocal on Twitter or a new TV series coming out, becomes a major cultural flashpoint. But at its core, it's a story about love, friendship, and how messy it is to grow up.

That's why it keeps people coming back to these timeless stories and engaging with the characters and themes over and over.

These quotes are just the tip of the iceberg.
